When should you start the adoption journey?

There is no ‘perfect’ time to start the adoption process.
Life comes with a range of uncertainty, but we want people to be in a stable enough position to deal with the challenges of parenthood.
We aren’t looking for perfect people (because they don’t exist), but for people that have been through a range of life experiences.
Here are a few things to consider before starting your journey;
Home and Lifestyle
- Potential adopters to be in a stable home and provide a secure base. We advise that you have a spare bedroom for a child, however, we would rather have a chat with you to discuss your circumstances if this isn’t the case.
- It doesn’t matter if you are renting or own your property, the main thing is that you have the space in your home and heart for a child.
- If you have a medical condition or disability this will NOT stop you from applying to adopt. However, you need to be fit enough, emotionally, and physically to look after a young child – this will all be discussed in more detail during the first phone call.
- Everyone’s circumstances are different. Contact us if you want to discuss this in more detail.
Fertility Treatment
- If you have recently undertaken IVF treatment, we may ask you to take some time to reflect on this before starting the process.
- Recent experiences can be difficult for a lot of people and some may need more time than others.
- Everyone’s circumstances are different. Contact us if you want to discuss this in more detail.
Relationships
- You can adopt whether you’re single, in a relationship, civil partnership or married, it doesn’t matter.
- However, If you have recently started or ended a relationship, we may ask you to come back to us after some time of stability.
- Once again, everyone’s circumstances are different. Contact us if you want to discuss this in more detail.
Next steps
The first step would be to attend an information session to find out more about the process. All potential adopters must attend an information session before starting the process.
